Homework Assignments: Week 8
English 9

Monday 10/10 Based on the writing notes, my suggestions on your essay, and your own ideas, revise and write a final draft of your character analysis. Final drafts are due Wednesday, but bring whatever you have finished to class on Tuesday so I can check your work and answer questions.

Tuesday 10/11 Finish writing the final draft of your character analysis. Once you’ve made all your main changes like adding to your reflections and using MAV, read your essay aloud to check for errors and awkward sections. Make sure it sounds good and that you’ve corrected everything. Spend time on this assignment because your essay packet with all three drafts is worth 150 points.

Wednesday 10/12 Finish your Visual Representation of one of the stories we’ve read this year if you have not done so already.

Thursday 10/13 Read in your IR book. Schedule an IR test if you have not done so already.

Friday 10/14 Read in your IR book. All book tests for first quarter must be taken by October 19th.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Homework Assignments: Week 4 - 9

Week 7

Monday 10/3 Based on comments from peer editors, the grading criteria sheet, and your own ideas, revise and write a second draft of your character analysis. Second drafts are due on Tuesday, October 4. Please hand in your second draft (stapled to the top of your first draft) before you leave for the field trip on Tuesday. This applies to both first and second period.

Tuesday 10/4 Work on your visual representation. Make sure you have the title, author, quotation, and a few symbols on your Photoshop document (or on paper).

Wednesday 10/5 Read to page 16 in Of Mice & Men. Read carefully so that you're prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow. Study for Vocabulary Quiz #1 if you want to re-take it this week.

Thursday 10/6 Read to the end of page 32 in Of Mice & Men. Read carefully so that you're prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow.

Friday 10/7 Read in your IR book. All book tests for first quarter must be taken by October 19th.

 

Week 6

Monday 9/26 Study for vocabulary quiz #1. Make sure you know the definition of all 10 words and that you can use all of them in a sentence that shows the meaning of the word. Look at the link on the web page to give you good examples. Make flash cards for each word and learn them well because you will be tested on them multiple times. The test will be on Wednesday.

Tuesday 9/27 Finish your prewriting/character map for your essay. Do some last minute studying for the vocabulary quiz tomorrow.

Wednesday 9/28 Work on the first draft of your character analysis. Due Friday. Bring your IR book to class tomorrow.

Thursday 9/29 Finish writing the first draft of your character analysis. Due tomorrow.

Friday 9/30 Finish reading your first IR book. If you’re reading more than one book for this quarter, your first test needs to be taken by October 3rd and all books by October 19th. If you’re reading just one long book, be sure you’ve read more than 300 pages by this weekend.

 

Week 5

Monday 9/19 Finish your metaphor drawing ; see the model for an example. Finish the questions on “Thank You Ma’m” if you didn’t get them finished in class.

Tuesday 9/20 If you have not done so already finish your metaphor drawing ; see the model for an example. Complete the intro to "Raymond's Run." Fix your reflection on "Thank You Ma'm" if necessary (paragraphs and add a quotation or two.)

Wednesday 9/21 Finish reading “Raymond’s Run.” Complete the assignment when you finish reading and annotating the story.

Thursday 9/22 Finish reading “The Necklace.” Read carefully so that you are prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion.

Friday 9/23 Read in your IR book. If you’re reading more than one book for this quarter, your first test needs to be taken by October 3rd and all books by October 19th.

 

Week 4

Monday 9/12 Thoroughly answer the questions about “The Gift of the Magi.” Click on the link to get the questions.

Tuesday 9/13 Read to the end of page 66 in “The Most Dangerous Game.” Read carefully so that you’re prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow.

Wednesday 9/14 Finish reading “The Most Dangerous Game.” Read carefully so that you’re prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow. Complete a think write about the ending of the story.

Thursday 9/15 Complete Vocabulary #1. Go to the vocabulary page to get the words and directions.

Friday 9/16 Read in your IR book. If you’re reading more than one book for this quarter, your first test needs to be taken by October 3rd and all books by October 19th.

 

Week 10

Monday
10/25            Based on the grading criteria sheet, teacher comments, and your own ideas, revise and write the final draft of your essay, due tomorrow. After you finish all of your content changes, be sure to print out a copy and read aloud your essay to find any typos, missing words, grammar errors, or awkward sections. The make a final, final copy and print it out BEFORE class on Tuesday.

Tuesday
10/26            Finish reading your IR book if you have not done so already and work on your visual representation if you have time, due Friday. The final day for IR tests is tomorrow, Wednesday 10/27.

Wednesday
10/27            Work on your visual representation, due Friday. Spend time on this assignment because it is worth a lot of points. Be sure that your vis rep gives an interpretation of the short story, and not merely a summary. Look at the link to make sure you have all of the requirements like the title, author, quotation, overall organization, and at least 5 symbols that interpret the story.

Thursday
10/28            Finish your visual representation, due tomorrow.

Friday
10/29            Choose a new IR book (if you have not done so already) and begin reading. Remember to read for 60-90 minutes each weekend so that you finish your book on time and don’t have a last minute crisis at the end of the quarter.

 

Week 9

Monday
10/18            Based on the grading criteria sheet and peer editing comments, revise and write a second draft of your essay, due tomorrow.

Tuesday
10/19            Read in your IR book. You need to take your first IR test this week if you have not done so already. You may take a test on a second book next week in order to get the total page amount you would like (650 pages for an A+, 400 for a B-).

Wednesday
10/20            Work on your visual representation, due next week.

Thursday
10/21            Read in your IR book and work on your visual rep.

Friday
10/22            Read in your IR book. Work on the final draft of your essay, due Tuesday.

 

Week 8

Monday
10/11            Read in your IR book. You need to take your first IR test next week if you have not done so already. You may take a test on a second book the following week in order to get the total page amount you would like (650 pages for an A+, 400 for a B-).

Tuesday
10/12            Finish the prewriting (character map) for your character analysis of Squeaky or Mathilde. Due Wednesday.

Wednesday
10/13            Work on the first draft on your character analysis. Due Friday. Spend a lot of time on this assignment because it is worth 150 points total.

Thursday
10/14            Finish writing the first draft of your character analysis. Due tomorrow.

Friday
10/15            Read in your IR book. Schedule your first IR test for next week.

 

Week 7

Monday
10/4            Study for vocabulary quiz #2. Use your flash cards and practice using each word correctly in a sentence. Read in your IR book for at least 20 minutes.

Tuesday
10/5            Finish reading “Raymond’s Run.” Make sure to underline and write in the margins as you read so that you read more actively. Read carefully so that you are prepared for a reading quiz and class discussion tomorrow.

Wednesday
10/6            Complete the questions on “Raymond’s Run.” See the link for details. Study for Vocabulary Quiz#2. Read in your IR book

Thursday
10/7            Finish studying for Vocabulary Quiz #2. Make sure you know the definitions for all 20 words and that you can correctly use each word in a sentence that shows the meaning of the word. Read for at least 20 minutes in your IR book. If you have not finished reading a book yet, make sure you get caught up and schedule an IR test asap.

Friday
10/8            Complete the pre-writing assignment for your character analysis. Due Monday. Read in your IR book.

Tuesday
9/28 Complete the Introduction to “The Necklace” assignment. Study for vocabulary quiz #2. The quiz will be on Friday. Re-read the first 4 pages of "A Sound of Thunder" and be ready for a reading quiz tomorrow.

Wednesday
9/29           Read for at least 30 minutes in your IR book. Finish your word art if you have not done so already.

Thursday
9/30            Finish reading “The Necklace.” Make sure to underline and write in the margins as you read so that you read more actively. Read carefully so that you are prepared for a reading quiz and class discussion tomorrow. Complete the Introduction to “Raymond’s Run” assignment.

Friday
