Old Assignments: Weeks 1- 2

Week 2

Monday
8/31            Based on peer editing comments and your own ideas, revise your childhood memory. Make sure you are really showing or recreating the incident for your audience and not just describing what happened. Don’t forget the reflection piece at the end. Please hand in both drafts (the final one on top) to the basket on Tuesday.

Tuesday
9/1            Complete Vocabulary #1. See the vocabulary page for the words and instructions.

Wednesday
9/2            Print out your notes and think writes and put them in the proper locations in your 3-ring binder. Be prepared for a notebook check tomorrow (Thursday). Finish your “A Sound of Thunder” questions if you have not done so already. Make sure you’re ready for your Mango Street presentation if you’re going tomorrow, otherwise read about 20 pages in your IR book.

Thursday
9/3            Finish up your preparation for your Mango Street presentation. Make sure your notes are finished and your lesson plan and materials are ready and printed out. If you’ve already gone, read about 20 pages in your IR book.

Friday
9/4            Read in your IR book. Read about 70 pages this weekend.

Week 1

Monday
8/24            Read “Thank You, Ma’m” (p. 120) and write a paragraph making inferences about the boy’s character based on the facts Hughes presents in his short story. Take what you learned from writing about Rockwell’s painting and apply it to this assignment.

Tuesday
8/25            Read the student model to get another picture of what your writing assignment entails. Brainstorm events from your own childhood that would make a good story and allow readers to infer something about who you are, what your personality and values are, etc. Write down these ideas and a few details for each one you seriously consider writing about. Re-write your “Thank You, M’am” paragraph if necessary.

Wednesday
8/26            Work on your childhood memory writing, due Friday, but bring at least a page or two of your narrative to class on Thursday.

Thursday
8/27            Finish writing the first draft of your childhood memory. Due tomorrow.

Friday
8/28            Read in your IR book. Aim to read about 70 pages per weekend, or 10 pages a night in order to reach the A level by the end of the quarter without a last minute crisis.

Friday
8/21
Analyze the Norman Rockwell painting titled “Breaking Home Ties.” Use your notes from class discussion and your understanding of inference to write a paragraph or two interpreting the painting. Write about one page (typed, double spaced). Choose an Independent Reading book and bring it to school next week.
