Although many believe that “never was there a story of more woe / Than this of Juliet and her Romeo,” the sadness does not come from the tragic deaths of two young lovers, but from the fact that two teens who barely know each other kill themselves for what they think is love. . . Countless times, Shakespeare shows that Romeo and Juliet have a great physical attraction for each other, but not much else. Although Romeo and Juliet initially speak to each other through the romantic form of the sonnet, indicating a deep connection, they start kissing after speaking for about 60 seconds. They become engaged and married after knowing each other for less than 24 hours. Even after their marriage, their love does not deepen; their love is still entirely superficial. When Juliet first hears that Romeo has killed her cousin, Tybalt, she maligns Romeo:
Her initial response is to rage at Romeo, not only for killing her dear cousin, but for tricking her. She believes that Romeo has deceived her by looking beautiful and being evil, that “beautiful tyrant,” that “fiend angelical.” This implies that she believes there is nothing more to know than his outside, that knowing his appearance is the same as knowing his personality. She is so naïve that she has no idea what true love is. She blames him rather than herself for falling in love with his “flow’ring face” and not his personality, his mind, or even his heart. If she had known anything about Romeo’s personality, she would have known that he doesn’t fight, but out of necessity. Even when she corrects herself, she argues that she is relieved because it could have been Romeo dead rather than Tybalt, instead of seeing Romeo’s loyality and bravery of fighting for the life of his best friend, Mercutio. Romeo and Juliet die for this, they die for their childish misunderstanding of love. Clearly they die for nothing. |
