Homework Assignments: Week 7
English 10

Monday 10/3 Based on the writing notes, my comments, and your ideas, work on revising for your final draft. Final drafts are due on Wednesday.

Tuesday 10/4 Work on your final draft.

Wednesday 10/5 Finish writing the final draft of your comparison essay. Carefully use the writing notes and spend a lot of time a lot of time revising. Read your essay aloud and listen for awkward sections or errors and fix them. Due tomorrow.

Thursday 10/6 Complete Vocabulary #3. Get the words and definitions from the vocabulary page. Be prepared to present your visual representation on Thursday or Friday

Friday 10/7 Read in your IR book. All book tests for first quarter must be taken by October 19th.

Monday 9/12 Answer the questions on “Like the Sun.” See the link. Begin studying for vocabulary quiz #2. The quiz will be on Thursday.

Tuesday 9/13 Finish reading and using post-its to annotate “Everyday Use.” Read carefully so that you are prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow.

Wednesday 9/14 Study for vocabulary quiz #2. Make sure you know all 24 words. See the vocabulary page for sentences and definitions.

Thursday 9/15 Finish the pre-writing for your comparison essay.

Friday 9/16 Read in your IR book. If you’re reading more than one book for this quarter, your first test needs to be taken by October 3rd and all books by October 19th.

 

Week 3

Tuesday 9/6 Finish reading “The Lottery” and annotate as you read. Pay particular attention to the villagers and to their attitude towards the black box. Finish preparing for the debate on “The Lady or the Tiger?” if you have not done so already. The debate will be tomorrow. Make sure your GoogleDoc is ready to go because you will use it during the debate and you will receive a grade on your performance during the debate and on the GoogleDoc notes.

Thursday 9/8 Read in your IR book. Aim to read about 70 pages per weekend, or 10 pages a night in order to reach the A level by the end of the quarter without a last minute crisis.

Friday 9/9 Complete the introductory assignment for "Everyday Use."

Monday 8/29 Complete Vocabulary #1. Go to the vocabulary page to get the words and the directions.

Tuesday 8/30 Finish the assignment on “The Lady or the Tiger.” See the link for details. Begin studying for Vocabulary Quiz #1.

Wednesday 8/31 Study for Vocabulary Quiz #1. The quiz will be on Thursday.

Thursday 9/1 Work on preparing for “The Lady or the Tiger?” debate. Be sure that you have the intro written out, that you have all your main points and quotations on the GoogleDoc, and that you have all of your rebuttal ideas and quotes on the GoogleDoc.

Friday 9/2 Read in your IR book. Aim to read about 70 pages per weekend, or 10 pages a night in order to reach the A level by the end of the quarter without a last minute crisis. Do any last minute preparation needed for “The Lady or the Tiger?” debate.

 

Week 1

Monday 8/22 Finish reading “The Stolen Party.” Please read carefully and annotate as you go (underline important parts and reflect in the margins). Be sure to read carefully so that you are prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow.

Tuesday 8/23 Choose one significant quotation from “The Stolen Party” and reflect on it in detail. Write at least one page, but try to write more. See the model for an example of a quotation reflection. Choose an IR book for this quarter and bring it in one day this week. Get your Course Information sheet signed and be prepared for a notebook check on Tuesday 8/30.

Wednesday 8/24 Read and annotate to the end of page 63 in “Top Man.” Be sure to read carefully so that you are prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow.

Thursday 8/25 Finish reading and annotating “Top Man.” Write a paragraph summary of what happens at the end of the story (it's confusing but do the best you can.) Be sure to read carefully so that you are prepared for a reading quiz and/or class discussion tomorrow.

Friday 8/26 Read in your IR book. Aim to read about 70 pages per weekend, or 10 pages a night in order to reach the A level by the end of the quarter without a last minute crisis. Don’t forget to get your notebook organized and get your Course Information Sheet signed if you have not done so already. Notebook checks on Tuesday.

Week 7

Monday
10/4            Finish preparing for the debate tomorrow if necessary. Study for vocabulary quiz #2. (Quiz on Wednesday). Use your flash cards to study all 24 words and practice using each word correctly in a sentence. Work on your visual representation. Honors students be sure to take the Oedipus exam today or Tuesday and plan to meet after school on Wednesday to discuss the play.

10/1          Work on your visual representation on one of the short stories that we’ve read so far this year. Finish up any preparations that you need for the debate on Monday. Read in your IR book.

 

Week 5

Monday
9/20     Finish reading “The Lottery.” Do a think write on the ending. What happened? What is your opinion of this ending? Why do the villagers do this every year? What is the point of the story? Choose a few quotations to reflect on as you write to focus your writing. 

Tuesday
9/21     Work on the final draft of your comparison essay. Use my comments, your own ideas, and the writing notes to help you revise. Try to make all your content changes tonight. Bring your IR book to class tomorrow, Wednesday.

Wednesday
9/22     Finish the final draft of your comparison essay. Once you have made all the major changes, go back through your essay and make sure you’re writing in the present tense, make sure you’ve gotten rid of all passive voice, make sure you have precise word choice, and that your writing flows smoothly. Read your essay out loud to listen for any awkward sections or mistakes. Make those final changes. Then print out your final, final draft before class on Thursday.

Thursday
9/23     Complete Vocabulary #2. See the vocabulary page for the words and directions. Hand in your vocabulary on Friday or Monday (we won’t have regular classes on Friday because of career day).

Friday
9/24     Read in your IR book. As soon as you finish your first book, schedule a reading quiz.

 

Week 4

Monday
9/13            Finish your outline and begin writing your introduction. For the outline, you may copy and paste one of the sample outlines into Pages or Word and then fill in the details. You should fill in the trait for each body paragraph and the meaty quotation that proves each point. Look at the sample thesis statements and the outlines for help writing your introduction. Please print out your outline before class tomorrow.

Tuesday
9/14            Write at least the first page of your comparison essay, typed double spaced. This should include your introduction, first body paragraph, and at least the beginning of the second body paragraph.

Wednesday
9/15 Finish writing your comparison essay. Your essay should be about 3 pages long, double spaced, typed. If you don’t have a computer still, please use one of the school computers in room #1 or room #3.

Thursday
9/16            Based on the peer editing comments you received and on your own ideas, revise and write a second draft of your comparison essay. Be sure to make significant improvements. Hand in both drafts, second draft on top, tomorrow at the beginning of the period. Please print before school starts.

Friday
9/17            Finish studying for Vocabulary Quiz #1. Make sure you know the definition for all 12 words and you can correctly use each word in a sentence that shows the meaning of the word. Use the link on the vocabulary page to help you study. Quiz on Monday. Read in your IR book. As soon as you finish your first book, schedule a reading quiz.

9/10            Read in your IR book. Complete a think write on the final page of "Everyday Use." Analyze what you think is most important and make inferences. Include at least two quotations in your writing and try to write a full page. This assignment is about ideas, not grammar or spelling.
