Poetry Presentation: Honors English 10

Poem Choice: For your poetry presentation, please choose a poem from our literature anthology that you are interested in teaching to the class. Remember to choose a poem that you think has an interesting or important meaning and will merit at least 25 minutes of discussion and writing in class. Write down the title of the poem, the author, the page #, and why you’re interested in teaching the poem. Also choose whether you will present the poem individually or you will work with another student in the class and present two poems in 50 minutes. Remember, I will expect both of you to participate equally and to share the workload of preparation. Make a wise decision about working with a partner. (5 points: due Monday 2/23 at the end of the period)

Questions: Read your poem several times and answer the questions about it in your anthology. (10 points: due Tuesday, February 24th)

Interpretation: Think about what the poem really means. Discuss your interpretation of the poem with me on Tuesday. Write at least one page explaining your interpretation of the poem. (10 points: due Wednesday, February 25th)

Presentation Outline Brainstorm ideas of how to most effectively teach the poem. You have 20 - 25 minutes to teach the poem, so choose enough activities to keep the class focused. If you think you may need more than 25 minutes to teach your poem, please see me ahead of time. Type up your outline of your presentation (list what activities you will do with the poem). You may have students write about (questions, essay, or quiz), discuss, draw the meaning of, or act out an interpretation of the poem. (15 points: due Friday, February 27th)

Poem Memorization: Memorize your poem. Make sure that you know your poem perfectly so that when you recite it next week, it sounds good. In addition to memorizing the words of the poem, work on reciting it so that the way you say it (intonation, pausing, emphasis, etc.) helps show the meaning of the poem. We will do practice recitations on Thursday and Friday—make sure you have memorized it by then. (25 points: due 3/2 - 3/5)

Poetry Presentation: Next week, you will present your poem to the class. You may first recite the poem and then teach your lesson or do an introductory activity before you recite your poem and then conduct your lesson. Make sure that your lesson helps all of the students in the class to analyze and understand the meaning of the poem. (45 points: due Monday March 2 through Thursday 3/5)
