Lord of the Flies: Chapter 8
Group Assignment

Briefly discuss your homework reflections on #1 and #2

1. Compare Jack’s leadership style with Ralph’s. Why don’t the boys initially follow Jack or vote for him as chief? And then, why do they join his tribe later? What kind of power does he have over them? Who is the most effective leader? Why?

2. Reflect on the scene where Jack’s tribe hunts the sow. What does this scene show about the values of Jack and his tribe? What do you think the hunting and killing of the sow and her piglets and the gift for the beast symbolize? (i.e. what is Golding trying to show about Jack and his tribe through this scene?)

Next: Re-read pages 137-138 where Simon loses consciousness and begins to hallucinate. Then read the last 2 pages of the chapter, 143-144. Once you've all read it, divide into groups and answer the question #3 from last night's homework that you couldn't do last night because you hadn't read enough. (Sorry!)

3. Reflect on the scene where Simon converses with the Lord of the Flies. What’s actually happening in this scene? Who is the Lord of the Flies and/or what does he symbolize? Reflect specifically on the Lord of the Flies words, “Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill . . . You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no got? Why things are the way they are?” (143) Why do you think the book is titled Lord of the Flies?
