Honors English 10

 

The embedded honors program gives all students the opportunity to challenge themselves and learn more without separating out students into leveled classes. This program is open to all students and will focus on the standard college preparatory curriculum in the regular English 10 class with the following differences:

  1. Summer Reading requirement: All Quiet on the Western Front
    1. Read the text, complete the note-taking assignment, pass the reading exam, attend the two after school discussions of the text, complete the writing assignments about the text, complete the visual representation on the text
  2. Additional Quarterly Assignments:
    1. First Quarter: Oedipus Rex

                                               i.     Read the text, attend the two after school discussions of the text, complete the writing assignments about the text

    1. Second Quarter: A DollŐs House

                                               i.     Read the text, attend the two after school discussions of the text, complete the writing assignments about the text, participate in the after school debate on the text

    1. Third Quarter: Pygmalion

                                               i.     Read the text, attend the two after school discussions of the text, complete the writing assignments about the text, complete the visual representation on the text

    1. Fourth Quarter: Special project

                                               i.     Creative writing: write a 10 page, multi-draft short story (see the handout for more details)

  1. Additional Independent Reading requirement: honors students will need to read a minimum of 700 pages per quarter to earn an A on their IR grade each quarter (whereas English 10 students need to read 600)
  2. Exams: all exams taken in the regular English 10 class will have an honors version that will have a few additional, more-challenging questions on them.
  3. Essays: all essays written in English class will have an honors rubric with higher expectations for each component (content, style, language, and revision process)
