Friday
1/14            Read in your IR book and schedule a test as soon as you’ve finished a book.

Week 18

Monday
1/3            We’ll be working on researching for the speech contest topic all this week. This years topic is Enforcing our Borders: States versus Federal Rights. Read the New York Times overview article on Arizona’s immigration law SB1070. Read at least the first three pages of United States v. Arizona. Find both articles on the speech contest GoogleDoc and print out and underline on the articles or save to your computer and highlight there. You will show your highlighting at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Tuesday
1/4            Read articles on the speech topic from the GoogleDoc. Please start with articles from the GoogleDoc because choosing articles from reputable sources is very important in giving a speech. Once you have your grounding, you can branch out and look for your own articles. I would recommend searching SFGate.com and NYTimes.com because they both have free on-line archives (unlike many newspapers). You also might want to try PBS.org, NPR.org, WhiteHouse.gov and AZ.gov. Please print out and underline or save and highlight on your computer and show me what you’ve read at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Wednesday
1/5            In addition to continuing your research on the speech contest topic, write up a brief paragraph about your opinion on the issue and ideas for your speech angle. Bring to class your paragraph and any new articles you’ve read. Be sure to save all the source information on each article because we will write up bibliographies next week.

Thursday
1/6            Do more research on the speech contest topic and bring your articles to class tomorrow.

Friday
1/7            Read in your IR book and schedule a test as soon as you’ve finished a book. I know many of you were planning on finishing a book over winter vacation. Work on the first draft of your speech on Enforcing our Borders: States versus Federal Rights. First drafts will be due next Wednesday January 12

Week 23

Monday
2/23            Choose a poem you’d like to discuss in class from the anthology—read at least 10 poems before you make a choice. Write down the title, poet, and page number. Write one paragraph explaining why you chose the poem and why you think it will be interesting to discuss.

Tuesday
2/24            Read the student choice poem "Against Love" (p. 754) several times and then write a think write on it. Write at least a page.

Wednesday
2/25            Read the student choice poem "Hymn to God the Father" (p. 768) several times and then write a think write on it. Write at least a page.

Thursday
2/26            Write a reflection on “Sestina.” Write more than a page.

Friday
2/27            Read in your IR book. Finish your prewriting for the poetry essay if you have not done so already.

Week 22

2/9           Finish your bibliography if you have not done so already. Write a reflection on “The Shield of Achilles.” A reflection is more than a think write, but less than a full-fledged essay. Write more than a page, but focus on whatever you find most interesting about the poem. Do not feel obligated to analyze everything, just a few stanzas, lines, or concepts. Stay close to the text and analyze thoughtfully.

Tuesday
2/10            Write a reflection on “There’s a certain slant of light.” Write more than a page.

Wednesday
2/11            Write a reflection on “I heard a fly buzz when I died.” Write more than a page.

Thursday
2/12            Write two style analysis paragraphs on one of the poems we’ve read so far this year. Write a clear introduction and one full, meaty body paragraph.

Friday
2/13            Read in your IR book. You should be at 200 pages or so for this quarter. The week-long vacation should be a good opportunity to catch up (or get ahead) if you’re behind.

Week 21

Monday
2/2            Practice delivering your speech. First, make sure you know the entire speech well so that you can focus on your delivery. Second, practice pausing and delivering your speech slowly and clearly—don’t trail off at the end of your sentences. Remember the four Ps: Power, Passion, Poise, and Pausing.

Tuesday
2/3            Keep practicing your speech delivery. Be prepared to give a graded rehearsal of your speech tomorrow (you don’t need to dress up for this).

Wednesday
2/4            Finish preparing for your speech. All students will deliver their speeches to the entire school tomorrow morning, Thursday February 5th. Wear something nice to school tomorrow.

Thursday
2/5            No homework!

Friday
2/6            Read in your IR book. Read a lot this weekend if you’ve not been reading much lately. You should be at 150 pages or so for this quarter.

Week 20

Monday
1/26            Complete the assignment on “The Whipping.” Begin learning the hook of your speech if you have it exactly as you want it.

Tuesday
1/27           Make any necessary last minute changes to your speech and then start learning your speech. Make sure you know the first paragraph (or half page) by tomorrow, Wednesday the 28th.

Wednesday
1/28            Keep practicing your speech delivery. Be prepared to give the first page and a half of your speech by Friday.

Thursday
1/29            Keep practicing your speech delivery. Learn as much as you can by Friday, but at least the first page and a half. You must know your entire speech by Tuesday so that you have two days to hone your delivery before the final performance on Thursday February 5th.

Friday
1/30            Learn as much of your speech as you can, but plan on learning at least the first 3 pages by Monday. If you have a longer speech, make sure you know the entire speech by Tuesday. Also start practicing your delivery. Be sure to pause and vary your intonation to enhance the meaning and persuasiveness of your speech. Remember, if you spend a lot of time this weekend and start next week knowing your speech well, Thursday’s performance will be a lot less stressful.

Week 19

Tuesday
1/20            Based on peer editing comments, the grading criteria, and your own ideas, write a second draft of your speech. Due tomorrow.

Wednesday
1/21            Complete the poetry assignment. See the link for details.

Thursday
1/22            Use the writing notes, my comments on your speech, and your own ideas to revise your speech and write a final draft. Spend a lot of time because the better your final draft is, the more confident you’ll feel about delivering your speech to the school on February 5th. Finish writing the final draft of your speech. Due Monday. If you want to start learning your speech over the weekend, then hand in your speech by the end of the day on Friday.

Friday
1/23            Finish the final draft of your speech by Monday if you have not done so already. If you know your hook is good, begin learning that too. I’d like you to know at least the first paragraph of your speech by Tuesday.

Week 18

Monday
1/12            Go through the Google Doc links and search on your own to find useful articles to round out your research. Look at the 2009 Water Plan, look at some of the specifics in the plan (South and North Lahontan regions, find the supply and demand numbers), and find specific articles that help you with the angle you’ve chosen for your speech. Begin reading through your articles. Bring your annotated articles to class on Tuesday.

Tuesday
1/13            Continue researching and honing in on the angle you want to pursue. Bring in your next batch of annotated articles for Wednesday. You may want to come in at 8:00 on Wednesday if you don’t have a good internet connection at home so you can get some more research done.

Wednesday
1/14            Do some more research if necessary or start working on your prewriting. Finish your IR if you have not done so already--all IR tests must be taken by tomorrow.

Thursday
1/15            Finish up your research if you’re not done yet and work on your intro. Bring whatever you have done to class tomorrow because you will have the whole period to work on writing. Be sure to look at the speech writing tips because speeches should be written differently than essays.

Friday
1/16            Finish writing the first draft of your speech. First drafts are due on Tuesday for juniors and seniors. Make your first draft really good because we will move through the revision process very quickly.

Week 17

Monday
1/5            Finish reading and annotating the Cadillac Desert excerpts. Read the first 14 pages carefully, skim through the next sections, marking those areas that are of interest to you. I have the entire book if you’re interested in reading more.

Tuesday
1/6            Finish reading and annotating the Water Education Foundation overview. Read this whole packet carefully—it should help a lot.

Wednesday
1/7            Finish reading and annotating the California Water Plan summary.

Thursday
1/8            Search for and annotate appropriate articles for your speech. First make sure you’ve browsed through all the articles in the email, then search any of the applicable sites from the email that look like they’ll be helpful to your topic, then go onto Google and look for more specific articles. Bring out printed and annotated articles to class tomorrow.

Friday
1/9            Finish reading IR. Tests will be next week. Finalize your ideas for a speech angle. Do more research and be ready to start writing early next week.
