Chapters 6 - 9: Group Reading Quiz

1. Analyze Pearl's character. Be sure to look a her personality and behavior in the context of the Puritan environment, her exclusion from the community, the community's assumptions about her, and the expectations that Hester has of her. When you discuss whether Pearl is a "demon child" or not, please focus your discussion on direct lines from the novel. What is the symbolism of her name? Also analyze her symbolic and/or literal connection to the scarlet letter. Should Hester be the one to raise her? Find several quotations to support and focus your discussion. Be sure to look at pages 70, 77 and 79.

2. Read page 84. Why is Roger Chillingworth called the Leech? What is his purpose? How is he changing already?
