Old Assignments
Answer the following prompt using a scene from All the Pretty Horses. Be sure to choose your scene (I recommend the knife fight scene (pages 198-201)) and to Xerox it before you go home to analyze it. Due Monday, September 12
In great literature, no scene of violence exists for its own sake. Choose a work of literary merit [All the Pretty Horses] that confronts the reader or audience with a scene or scenes of violence. In a well-organized essay, explain how the scene or scenes contribute to the meaning of the complete work. Avoid plot summary.
9/4 Choose two quotations from All the Pretty Horses and reflect on them in detail. Write more than a half page about each quotation. Focus on analyzing the specific lines rather than summarizing the plot surrounding the quotations. Look at the model quotation reflection if you’re not sure what to do. The key to this assignment is choosing meaty quotations. Don’t start writing about a quotation unless you have a lot to say about it—choose carefully. Remember to copy down your quotations before you leave school if you don’t have your own copy of the book. Also, write down at least two questions or topics for discussion.
