Take what you learned from class discussion of the passage and from your Magna Soles rhetorical analysis to help you do an even better job on this timed writing. Spend at least 40 minutes writing this essay, but you may spend an extra 10 minutes. Do not spend any longer than 50 minutes. 40 minutes should be enough time to write a good essay.Thursday

Remember that you’re responsible for making significant improvements in your writing. 8/24 Based on our discussion of Royko’s “A Faceless Man’s Plea,” write an informal analysis of Royko’s rhetoric. Use direct quotations from the article and explain the why and how as well as the what. Analyze content (what Royko argues for, what the point of his article is) in tandem with how he makes his argument so persuasive.Tuesday
8/25 Go through Frederick Douglass and find 3 significant quotations and reflect on one of them in detail. As you go through the narrative looking for quotations, review the plot, characters, significant scenes, etc. so that you are prepared for the test next week. Write about one page on the quotation. Focus on analyzing the specific lines rather than summarizing the plot surrounding the quotations. Look at the model quotation reflection if you’re not sure what to do. The key to this assignment is choosing meaty quotations. Don’t start writing about a quotation unless you have a lot to say about it—choose carefully.Wednesday

Do you think Twain literally does not want his readers to think about his novel and just read it for fun, or do you think he intends his readers to do the opposite. Explain your viewpoint and use specific examples and quotations to support your view.Tuesday
8/31 Write a persuasive essay that counters the arguments of Twain’s contemporary critics. Do you think Huckleberry Finn is an immoral or racist book? Use the comments of the critiques and quotations from the novel to frame your argument that the critics misinterpreted the novel. The final essay is due Tuesday, 9/6 but please bring the first page of your essay to class on Thursday so I can check your progress.Thursday
