Short Stories

Be creative and write about what interests you, but please follow the guidelines below:

  • Develop a character based story, not a plot based story
  • Show Not Tell
  • Create a believable setting
  • Create developed characters with contrasting personalities and show their emotions
  • Have an interesting conflict and a plot (but not too complex)
  • Use dialogue and describe tone of voice
  • Use physical description (facial expressions, gestures, body language, etc)
  • Use the five senses and be descriptive
  • Limit your story to 2 – 5 scenes (allow at least two pages of writing for each scene)
  • Write about 5 pages (more is okay)
